Σ-∆ background subtraction and the Zipf law

چکیده

The Σ-∆ background estimation is a simple non linear method of background subtraction based on comparison and elementary increment/decrement. We propose here some elements of justification of this method with respect to statistical estimation, compared to other recursive methods: exponential smoothing, Gaussian estimation. We point out the relation between the Σ-∆ estimation and a probabilistic model: the Zipf law. A new algorithm is proposed for computing the background/foreground classification as the pixel-level part of a motion detection algorithm. Comparative results and computational advantages of the method are commented.

Investigation of the Zipf-plot of the extinct Meroitic language

The ancient and extinct language Meroitic is investigated using Zipf’s Law. In particular, since Meroitic is still undeciphered, the Zipf law analysis allows us to assess the quality of current texts and possible avenues for future investigation using statistical techniques.

Generalized (m,k)-Zipf law for fractional Brownian motion-like time series with or without effect of an additional linear trend

We have translated fractional Brownian motion (FBM) signals into a text based on two ”letters”, as if the signal fluctuations correspond to a constant stepsize random walk. We have applied the Zipf method to extract the ζ′ exponent relating the word frequency and its rank on a loglog plot. We have studied the variation of the Zipf exponent(s) giving the relationship between the frequency of occ...

Beyond the Zipf-Mandelbrot law in quantitative linguistics

In this paper the Zipf-Mandelbrot law is revisited in the context of linguistics. Despite its widespread popularity the Zipf–Mandelbrot law can only describe the statistical behaviour of a rather restricted fraction of the total number of words contained in some given corpus. In particular, we focus our attention on the important deviations that become statistically relevant as larger corpora a...

Evolutionary Music and the Zipf-Mandelbrot Law: Developing Fitness Functions for Pleasant Music

A study on a 220-piece corpus (baroque, classical, romantic, 12tone, jazz, rock, DNA strings, and random music) reveals that aesthetically pleasing music may be describable under the Zipf-Mandelbrot law. Various Zipf-based metrics have been developed and evaluated. Some focus on musictheoretic attributes such as pitch, pitch and duration, melodic intervals, and harmonic intervals. Others focus ...
